Brave New Ways #5 / Open Futures, Transformational Change, New Beginnings

Happy New Year! And welcome back to Brave New Ways. How can this newsletter best support your boldest learning journeys in 2022?

Please tell us in this 1-minute survey.

How Do Journeys of Transformation Begin?

The beginning of a new year is a time with a special quality: we, and the people around us, tend to be more open to starting afresh and trying new ways. It’s not entirely rational, but it’s real. How can you take advantage of this collective openness to begin big new journeys?

Part I of this Holiday Edition offered three big questions to help stimulate your holiday reflections and surprise your brain into seeing new possibilities for the new year:

  • How open is the future?
  • How optional is new technology?
  • How likely are new forms of organization and society?

Re-read Part I now or listen to the Audio Edition via The Atlas Project Podcast.

Today’s Part II offers a ten-year case study and a four-step process to help you convert the new possibilities you’re starting to imagine into impactful journeys of discovery: for yourself, your groups and society.

Big Questions to Begin 2022

In the December episode of The Atlas Project Podcast, hosts Scott Kent Jones and Chris asked: What questions best capture the events of 2021 and set the stage for 2022? They came up with several:

  1. How far out is the future? This month = COVID? This decade = Climate Change? This century = China? Are we horizon makers or horizon takers?
  2. Who is the "we"? My political tribe? My nation? My human race? What challenges am I facing alone, and what challenges are you facing with me?
  3. Can blessings be powerful, too? We've all got great tools to sling mud and turn crypto-hype into gold. What about spreading goodwill? Can we work positive magic on each other?
  4. [Reserved for listeners!]

Listen now, and get some good conversation-starters to help you help people widen their horizons for 2022.

Four Meta-Questions to Help Deepen Conversations about the Future Last year, over 500 people took part in NewGeo's Weak Signals Survey. The idea was to help us perceive together, things that we cannot see alone. Over the subsequent months, I began to notice, in my own life and work, a handful of meta-questions that recur, again and again, in any meetings and conversations about the future. Then I realized: the first place I had seen these meta-questions had been in our collective responses to...

Rituals that kill new thinking, and how to subvert them Recently I ran a full-day workshop for two dozen leaders inside a global industrial company, to help them make plans to subvert their own thought-rituals and do more of what we all aim to do here at Neue Geo: "new thinking together." Here’s what we did. What would you do? Working with Fear Their deepest fear is that even though they are a giant corporation with annual revenues north of $20 billion, they might be overtaken – maybe even...

“Perspective is worth 50 points of I.Q.” A friend told me that this week. I don’t know if it’s true, but I like the sentiment! That’s the theme of this note: perspective. The Neue Geo team has been hard at work to bring Members new ways to gain those 50 I.Q. points of fresh perspective. Here are two unique invitations for you to gain uncommon perspective on how the rest of the world thinks. First, do you want to bring Unsettling Questions into a gathering of Chinese, Russian and Pakistani...
